by Dwal Godda theatre troupe
(Gharghur, Malta)

This event is FREE OF CHARGE and in both Maltese & English for tourists to be able to follow:

16.00 make your way to the centre of the village of Gharghur, up to the church parvis; there, a stage design suggesting a collision of eras flanks the pjazza & frames a cast of 70-strong actors for this ritualistic colourful street play.

18.00 the 1st act is concluded with commencement of the traditional Good Friday procession as it leaves the church to mingle amongst the streets and audience of Gharghur;

20.00 while the parvis re-establishes itself as the site for ‘public debate’, the actors who also formed part of the procession resume their role on stage while bringing to a halt the statutes and ‘breathing life’ into them during the 2nd act of HMAR TAS-SALIB ('the donkey of the cross').

21.00 – the cross transforms itself from being a mere prop, sign or ritual to become the tool for Jesus’ crucifixion leading to ... the end?
