Ramla l-Hamra Gozo

The Largest Beach On The Island,
Picturesque bay, Sand Dunes

Part Two

It is a favorite because it offers...

Ramla l-Hamra Gozo beach quality: The bay is kept clean all the time and the water is very clear.

Beach facilities: There is a restaurant and mobile vans that provide food and rentals of beach furniture.

Getting here: By car it is very easy. Make your way to the villages of Xaghra or Qala. From there you will find signs guiding you straight to the bay.

Public transport to Ramla l-Hamra Gozo: There are two buses passing from this bay, route 302 which starts from Mgarr, Ramla l-Hamra, Xewkija, Rabat, San Lawrenz and Dwejra.

Then there is route 322, and starts from Mgarr (Ferry boat service to Gozo), Nadur, Ramla l-Hamra, Xaghra and ends at Marsalforn.

Parking: The final approach road is fairly wide and during low season there  will be ample parking space. During peak summer months various farmers utilize their fields to let cars park inside under a small fee.

Persons with less mobility: The beach is very accessible. There is a timber walkway over the sand which facilities walking over the sand. The sea is very shallow and once you find an area which is free of pebbles, there is  easy access into the water.

Rest rooms: Upon arriving at the entrance of the bay there is a public rest room.

Warning: No specific warnings except when the sea is rough that one should be careful. This is mostly during the winter time and does not effect much of the swimming period.

Sand dunes

Beach furniture: You can easily rent sunbeds and deckchairs from mobile vans situated beside the beach entry point. Or you can bring your own.

Bar-b-ques: They are not allowed on the beach.

Camps: Not allowed on the beach.

Closest village: Xaghra and slightly further up is the village of Qala.

Cultural attractions

Calypso Caves besides the viewing gallery.

Knights of Malta fortified the bay against enemy invasion by constructing:

  • The Vendome battery which today it is not noticeable.
  • Submerged wall constructions across the bay to obstruct vessels trying to reach the shore.
  • Three batteries were constructed one on each side of the bay and one in the middle traces of which can still be seen behind the white statue.
  • A cannon cut out of rock known as fougasse with a barrel of around two metres. If fired against the enemy this would have caused havoc.

The Romans had built public baths at this location during the fourth and fifth century. They were built on the side of the bay very close to the fortifications built by the Knights of Malta. They were discovered in 1910 and were buried again after the required studies were completed.

Enjoy your time at Ramla l-Hamra Gozo. The best of Gozo beaches.
