Personal Credit Card

HSBC Business Credit Cards, BOV Malta,
APS Bank, Lombard Bank Malta, Banif Bank

Personal credit cards are today’s way of travelling. When coming to Malta you can use your credit card/s to pay for your purchases. There are still some locations where you do not find credit card accepting machines. For example, open air markets, small village coffee shops.

With credit cards you can buy air tickets, cinema tickets, clothing, restaurants, car rental, hotels, some of the petrol stations do have the services adjacent to the petrol pumps, etc. Like everywhere else. Also in other currencies other than the Euro. There might be locations where they charge for exchange rates, ask before effecting payments.

If you are coming here for just a holiday there is no need to have any account with a local bank. Just your credit card/s. Banking in Malta has developed like any other European country.

American Express, Diner’s Club, Master Card and Visa are accepted credit cards.

Many ATM’s are available on our islands. Almost all villages and towns have this service available. In business areas, shopping malls, touristic areas, you will probably find an ATM or located close by. They are for HSBC Malta, BOV Malta, APS Bank and Lombard Bank Malta.

ATM’s are linked with Visa/Electron/Plus and Master Card/Cirrus/Solo/Maestro. When you see them on the ATM’s you can check on your credit card it you have the sign. If so the service is available.

There are some exchange bureaux around the island namely which accept different types of currencies and traveler's cheque. This includes also the banks.

Travelling tips

  • To write your pin numbers in a safe place where you can find them quickly if you need them.
  • A good suggestion would be to have your home bank details with you in care you have any problems; contact person with telephone numbers. Also the bank’s emergency numbers when the bank branches are closed.
  • Before leaving your country be sure to have checked the expiry date of your personal credit cards.
  • You could write them in your mobile telephone directory but do not include the card type in case you loose both your mobile and cards together. Also write the credit card numbers for any eventuality to report to the police or your bank.
  • Be sure to sign your credit card with your own signature as provided to your bank on your day of application.
  • If you intend staying here for some time or a long working period, before you come over, check with your local bank and open an account here. You can then manage your money and transfer to the new account. While you are here you can manage your money for both bank accounts. All this could sound simple and why should be mentioned, but we have a very solid internet infrastructure which has permitted many international companies to settle here.

Personal credit cards are your best solution to carry around.  Rest your mind that you can use them at practically every location.
