Spinola Bay: best overall

For most first-time visitors, this is the safest option. Choose accommodation near Spinola Bay, the Ross stop, or the Portomaso entrance.

You will be near the restaurants around Spinola, and you can walk to Balluta and Paceville. There are also many buses nearby, with routes going directly or indirectly to Valletta, Rabat, Buġibba, Ċirkewwa, Għajn Tuffieħa, and Malta International Airport.

The main downside is that Spinola gets busy in the evenings. If your room is right above a waterfront restaurant or a busy road, you might hear traffic and people dining late. Staying a street or two back can be quieter, as long as the street is not too steep.

Paceville keeps nightlife within walking distance, but expect late-night noise.

Balluta Bay: best for walking and quieter nights

Balluta is the best option for visitors who want the promenade, frequent buses, and easy access to Sliema but prefer not to stay next to Paceville’s nightlife.

The waterfront path is easy to walk, with cafés, swimming spots, and bus stops all nearby. This area of St Julian’s is also the best choice if you plan to walk to Sliema often.

Keep in mind that the Valletta ferry departs from Sliema, not St Julian’s. If ferry access is important to your decision, compare St. Julian’s and Sliema for first-time visitors before booking. From Balluta, the ferry terminal is farther along the seafront, so taking a bus may be more comfortable with luggage or in hot weather.

Paceville and San Giljan: best for nightlife

When deciding where to stay in St. Julian’s for nightlife, central Paceville is a convenient choice if you want to be close to clubs, bars and St George’s Bay. The San Giljan and Ross bus stops also make it easy to get around, even at night.

But keep in mind that not every hotel in Paceville is quiet at night. Music, crowds, taxis, and street noise often last late, especially near the main entertainment area. Many hotel reviews suggest booking a room that faces away from the busiest streets.

For a quieter stay that is still close to the action, look for accommodation near Ross, Portomaso, or the lower Spinola area instead of right next to the busiest nightlife streets.

St George’s Bay and the Pembroke edge

This area is a good choice if you want a resort hotel, pool access, or easy trips to the sandy beach at St George’s Bay.

It is not the best spot for daily sightseeing. Some hotels are outside central Paceville, so you’ll have a longer walk to Spinola and Balluta. If you stay near Pembroke or on the upper roads, expect some uphill walks on your way back.

Pick this area if you want resort convenience, but keep in mind it is not the easiest place to stay without a car.
