Guide To Parking in Valletta

Best options, rules and local tips for parking in Malta’s capital

Valletta is one of the best places to visit in Malta, but parking can be one of the most frustrating parts of the day if you treat it like a normal town. The capital is compact, historic, busy, and full of narrow streets, one-way streets, residential areas, loading areas, and controlled access points.

My honest advice is simple: do not make street parking in Valletta your first plan, especially if you are a visitor or not used to driving in Malta. It can work at quieter times, but for most people, the smarter choice is to park outside the city and walk in, or use a ferry, bus, taxi, or Park & Ride.

If you are planning the rest of your visit, read our Valletta Malta guide for top sights, destinations, and ways to enjoy the capital.

This guide keeps things practical. Instead of giving you a long list of every possible space, it helps you decide which Valletta parking option is best for your visit.

My best Valletta parking recommendation

Whenever I visit Valletta for a few hours or the whole day, I usually park just outside the city. It’s still close enough to walk, and there are several parking areas that make things easier and less stressful.

This way, you avoid driving through the narrow streets in the city, paying CVA charges, or accidentally parking in resident-only or restricted spaces and getting a fine.

Visitor type Best parking option Why this works Keep in mind
First-time visitor City Gate / Floriana or MCP Easy access to the main entrance. Busy at peak times.
Budget visitor Floriana public parking or Park & Ride Usually the cheapest options. More walking may be needed.
Family with children MCP or paid parking near City Gate More predictable and less stressful. Costs more than street parking.
Elderly visitor or reduced mobility Paid parking, taxi or drop-off Reduces long walks and slopes. Valletta still involves walking.
Evening or event visitor MCP, Floriana or inside Valletta Late visits can be easier. Events can still cause congestion.
Waterfront or cruise visitor Waterfront parking or City Gate / Floriana Depends on your final stop. Waterfront is below the city.

Best parking options near Valletta

When you visit Valletta, you have a few parking options. We’ll show you what’s available and recommend which ones to try first. You can choose between free and paid parking.

1. Parking near City Gate and Floriana

For most visitors, parking close to City Gate or in the Floriana area is the most practical choice.

You are close enough to enter Valletta easily on foot, but avoid driving far into the city centre. Many locals would choose this option first. Parking in public spaces on residential roads also helps you avoid extra fees if you stay for a few hours.

Note: In Floriana, you must beware of signs indicating restricted parking at certain times.

👉 Good to know: This is usually the option I go for first before trying anything else.

2. MCP and paid car parks

If you want a more structured paid parking option close to the main entrance, MCP Underground Car Park and other paid car parks near the City Gate side are among the most practical choices.

They are usually better for visitors who want convenience over budget. This option suits short visits, theatre evenings, restaurant bookings, shopping, families, elderly visitors, or hot summer days when you want to avoid a long walk.

👉 Good to know: Choose this if you prefer a clear, paid option near Valletta rather than searching side streets.

3. Floriana public parking areas

Floriana is another place where both visitors and locals look for public parking. It is a bit further from Valletta, but you can still walk there.

Some residential streets have restrictions during the day, so make sure to check the signs. There are several parking areas, and you may need to pay a small tip or fee to park.

Attendants are usually present to help you find a spot, but always double-check that you are parked legally, since their guidance does not guarantee the space is allowed.

👉 Good to know: Floriana can be a good option if you do not mind walking, but always check the signs before leaving your car.

4. Floriana Park & Ride

Floriana Park & Ride is typically the most affordable option for visiting Valletta. It offers over 750 parking spaces across 3 zones (A, B, and D) at €0.40 per day, and includes a shuttle service to and from Valletta and Floriana on operating days. The drop-off in Valletta is at the bus terminus.

This option is ideal if you want to minimise costs and are comfortable starting your visit just outside the city.

The parking facility is open daily from 06:00 to 21:00, including Sundays and public holidays. Please note that the shuttle service does not operate on Sundays or public holidays. While parking is still available on these days, you will need to walk or arrange alternative transport.

👉 Good to know: This is usually the best budget option, but check the shuttle times before relying on it.

5. Valletta Waterfront Parking

Valletta Waterfront parking can be handy, but it is not the same as parking in central Valletta. The Waterfront is below the main city, next to the harbour. It is a good choice if you are visiting the restaurants, taking a harbour cruise, meeting cruise passengers, or going to an event at the Waterfront.

It is less convenient if you want to go straight to Valletta City centre. The walk is longer than the other options, but there is a lift that takes you up to Upper Barrakka. This helps you avoid a lot of uphill walking since the Waterfront is down by the harbour.

👉 Good to know: This is best if the Waterfront is part of your plan, not just as parking for central Valletta.

Valletta Parking Map

Use the map below to see where the main Valletta parking options are located. It helps you compare parking near City Gate, Floriana, Park & Ride, MCP / paid car parks, and the Valletta Waterfront before you arrive.

Use the map as a planning tool rather than waiting until you are in traffic. Valletta and Floriana can get busy. Having a first choice and a backup option makes the visit easier.

👉 Quick tip: If this is your first visit, look at parking outside Valletta first, then walk in through City Gate.

Parking inside Valletta: useful sometimes, but not my first choice

Parking in Valletta might seem convenient at first, but it can actually be quite frustrating. The city has narrow streets, lots of one-way roads, spaces reserved for residents, loading zones, time limits, and signs that are easy to misread if you are not familiar with driving in Malta.

If you are visiting Valletta for the first time, I would not recommend street parking as your main option. It is only worth trying if you arrive very early, plan a quick visit, know the area well, or feel comfortable with Malta’s driving and parking rules.

Common Valletta parking lines and signs

Along the streets inside Valletta, there are different colour-coded parking bays. Before leaving your car, look carefully at the road markings and nearby signs.

The colours are the following:

  • ⚪ White spaces are usually the easiest to understand as public parking, but still check nearby signs.
  • 🟡 Yellow markings normally mean you should not park there.
  • 🟢 Green spaces are generally linked to residents.
  • 🔵 Blue spaces may have time restrictions, often connected to resident parking during certain hours.

Always follow the nearest sign to avoid any penalties.

Understanding CVA before you drive in

CVA, or Controlled Vehicular Access, is the system that manages vehicle entry within Valletta.

Cameras monitor vehicles entering and exiting the CVA boundary. Charges are automatically calculated based on the duration of stay within the zone.

There is no toll booth for payment. If you are using a rental car, please confirm with your rental company how CVA charges are processed, as fees may be added later.

The CVA charges are as follows:

CVA rule Current CVA detail
First 30 minutes Free
Over 30 minutes up to 60 minutes €0.82
Over 60 minutes €0.82 per hour or part thereof
Maximum daily charge €6.52
Weekday entry after 14:00 No CVA fee
Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays No CVA fee

Checked against official CVA tariffs

When street parking inside Valletta might still make sense

It is best to park inside Valletta when you are a local, confident driver in Malta, arriving very early, making a short stop, or going at a quieter time. It can also be easier in the evening than during office hours.

For first-time visitors, though, I would not make it the main plan. Valletta is best enjoyed on foot, not by spending the start of your visit circling narrow streets looking for a space.

Ultimately, there are several better parking options just outside Valletta.

You can also consider the alternatives below if you prefer not to use your car at all.

Smarter alternatives when parking is not worth it

These smarter alternatives are better considered when visiting Valletta for big events, busy weekends and also public holidays when traffic is heavier, and parking is more difficult.

You can also compare buses, taxis, ferries and car rental options in our how to get around Malta guide.

Bus to Valletta

Valletta has the largest bus terminus, making it one of the easiest places in Malta to reach by bus. This is convenient if you stay in a well-connected area and want to avoid the pressure of driving or parking.

For more help using buses around the island, see our guide to Malta public transport.

Ferry from Sliema or the Three Cities

If you are staying in Sliema, Gżira, St Julian’s, Birgu, Isla, or Bormla, the ferry is one of the nicest ways to arrive. You will solve your parking problem and get to cruise along the beautiful harbour.

Always check the latest ferry timetable before travelling, especially in winter, late evening, bad weather, or around public holidays.

Taxi or ride-hailing

A taxi or ride-hailing service can be the easiest but most costly option. It is wise to use this service when visiting big events where streets are closed and parking is difficult.

My final advice for parking in Valletta

If this is your first visit, do not make street parking inside Valletta your first plan. Start with Floriana, City Gate, Park & Ride, or a nearby paid car park, then walk in.

If you are visiting during a busy weekend, a public holiday, an evening event, or a summer day, consider taking the ferry, bus, or taxi instead. It may save you time, stress, and unnecessary circling.

Valletta is best enjoyed on foot. The easier you make your arrival, the better the whole visit will feel.
