There are many beautiful village feasts across Malta and Gozo, and each has something different to offer. If you're visiting for the first time, these are some celebrations we recommend experiencing.
For Santa Marija celebrations: The Feast of the Assumption on 15 August is one of Malta's biggest religious celebrations, taking place in several localities. We particularly recommend Mosta, Mqabba, Qrendi and Victoria (Rabat), Gozo.
For lively band marches and atmosphere:San Gejtanu in Ħamrun, along with the feasts of St George and St Sebastian in Qormi, are worth considering. These celebrations are known for their enthusiastic supporters, music and decorated streets.
For spectacular fireworks:Birżebbuġa's St Peter in Chains is particularly worth visiting for its ground fireworks, generally held on the eve of the feast. We also recommend Lija's Feast of Christ Our Saviour and the celebrations in Mqabba, especially Our Lady of the Lily in June and Santa Marija in August.
For a traditional village experience:Żejtun's St Catherine feast and Żebbuġ's St Philip feast are other celebrations worth considering, with their processions, band marches and festive decorations.
Our local tip: The main feast date is not necessarily the best evening for fireworks or band marches. Check the parish or band club's programme before travelling, especially if you are hoping to see a particular event.
Did you know? The Maltese village festa was recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2023. It celebrates much more than the feast day itself, bringing local communities together through traditions, music, religious celebrations, decorations and fireworks.
Allow extra time for parking and road closures. Streets around the parish church and main square may close during band marches, processions and other celebrations. If you're driving, park outside the village centre and expect to walk.
Keep your belongings secure in busy areas. Popular feasts can attract large crowds, especially during evening celebrations. Keep your phone, wallet and camera secure, as you would at any crowded event.
Expect fireworks and loud music. If you're staying near a village celebrating its feast, you may hear fireworks from early in the morning and music late into the evening. This is worth considering when choosing accommodation.
Watch fireworks from designated public areas. Fireworks are a major part of many Maltese feasts, but displays and firing sites must be treated with care. Follow local safety instructions and never enter restricted areas.
