Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, when crowds welcomed him with branches and shouts of “Hosanna”. In Malta and Gozo, the celebration includes blessing palm and olive branches and, where organised, a procession into the church.

For a celebration with a procession, worshippers gather at the meeting point announced by the parish. The priest blesses the branches, and the congregation hears a Gospel account of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem before making its way to the church, accompanied by prayers or hymns. The route and arrangements vary by parish, so check the programme for the starting location and time.

The celebration continues with Mass, which includes the reading of the Passion—the account of Jesus’ suffering and death. This gives Palm Sunday both its joyful welcome and its solemn character as Holy Week begins.
